Exploring New
Global Opportunities
Reducing Food Waste through Cold-Chain Solutions. India is one of
the world’s leading producers of milk, fruit and vegetables, yet every year nearly $10 billion
worth of food goes to waste. This happens because India lacks a cold-chain infrastructure
to keep food fresh and safe. Facing the prospect of having to double its cold-chain capacity
to 61 million metric tons, the Indian government established a National Centre for Cold-chain
Development (NCCD) as a hub to train the country’s cold-chain stakeholders. To support
the Indian government’s initiatives, Emerson Climate Technologies invested in a cold-chain
distribution center in Chakan, Pune. The Emerson facility develops and builds the latest cold-
chain equipment and provides project design and planning, training, and aftermarket service
support. The facility also helps cold-chain operators and contractors create reliable, energy-
wise and cost-efficient cold rooms. As India expands its cold-chain infrastructure, Emerson will
continue to promote the initiatives together with NCCD and the cold-chain stakeholders
across the country in order to preserve more of India’s harvest.
