Generation’s net income increased primarily due to higher operating revenues, net of purchased power and fuel expense, partially offset by higher operating and
maintenance expenses and unrealized and realized losses in 2008 and realized gains in 2007 related to nuclear decommissioning trust funds associated with the
UnregulatedUnits.Highernetoperatingrevenues,netofpurchasedpowerandfuelexpense,reectedhigheraveragerealizedmargins,highernetmark-to-marketgains
oneconomichedgingactivities,lowercostsincurredinconjunctionwiththeIllinoisSettlement,a2007lossassociatedwiththetollingagreementwithGeorgiaPower
relatedtothecontractwithTenaska,increasedrevenuefromcertainlongoptionsintheproprietarytradingportfolioandgainsrelatedtothesettlementofuranium
supplyagreementsin2008,partiallyoffsetbyincreasednuclearfuelcosts,lowernuclearoutputreectingahighernumberofscheduledrefuelingandnon-refueling
outagedays,thegainontheterminationoftheStateLinePPAin2007,afavorablePJMbillingsettlementwithPPLin2007andimpairmentsofstoredoilandgasinventory
in2008.Higheroperatingandmaintenanceexpensesincludedincreasedwages,salariesandbenets(excludingstock-basedcompensation),nuclearrefuelingoutage
costsassociatedwithahighernumberofplannedrefuelingoutages,highercostsassociatedwithnucleardecommissioning-relatedactivitiesandtheestablishment
ofareserverelatedtocounterpartyexposuretoLehman,partiallyoffsetbydecreasesincontractorexpenses,stock-basedcompensationandcostsassociatedwiththe
possibleconstructionofanuclearpowerplantinTexas.Additionaloffsetstoincreasednetincomein2008includeddecommissioningtrustfundactivityassociated
withtheUnregulatedUnitswhichreectedunrealizedlossesin2008,realizedlossesrelatedtoataxplanningstrategyin2008andtheimpactofrealizedgainsin2007
associatedwithchangesinGeneration’sinvestmentstrategy. 31
