TheIllinoisCommerceCommission(ICC)approveda$274millionrateincrease
effectiveSept.16,2008.ComEdrequestedthisincreaseinresponsetohigher
coststomodernizeandmaintainsystemreliability.TheICCalsoestablished
alimitedAdvancedMeteringInfrastructurepilotandaworkshopprocessto
exploreSmartGridtechnologies.Implementingnewtechnologiesandequipment
willdramaticallychangethenatureofservicetocustomersandempowerthem
tomakewiserenergychoices,whichcanleadtolowerbillsandareduced
carbonfootprint.
ComEdcompletedtheWestLoopProject,thelargestTransmission&Distribution
projectithaseverundertaken.Thisprojectimprovesreliabilitybyexpandingthe
transmissionsysteminChicago’scentralbusinessdistrict,transformingitfroma
radialtoastate-of-the-artnetworksystem.
Enhancedreliability,consistentserviceandnewbusinessinitiativesarepaying
off.Theyear-endCustomerSatisfactionIndexscoreof79.2was4.4percentabove
the2007score.
ComEdfacedsignificantstormactivityinAugust,whichaffectednearly520,000
customers.ComEdcrewsrestoredserviceto98percentofcustomerswithin
48hours.
ComEdexpandeditsenergyefficiencyinitiativesthroughathree-yearportfolio
ofprogramscalledSmartIdeas™.Theprogramsareexpectedtoyieldmorethan
$155millioninsavingstocustomersandcouldresultinsignificantlyreduced
carbonemissions.
ComEdearnedInternationalStandardizationOrganization(ISO)14001certification
foritsEnvironmentalManagementSystem.Thiscertification,recognizedasthe
goldstandardacrossindustries,furthersolidifiesComEd’scommitmenttoand
exampleofenvironmentalleadership.
ComEdanditsnearly5,600employeesareresponsibleformaintainingmore
than78,000milesofpowerlinesthatmakeuptheelectrictransmissionand
distributionsystemsinNorthernIllinois.ComEdalsoprovidescustomeropera-
tionsformorethan3.8millioncustomersacrosstheregion,or70percentofthe
state’spopulation

2008sawPECOachievetopdecileindustryratinginsafety,a17-percentimprovement
inemployeeengagementanditshighest-evernon-stormreliabilityrating–all
theresultofthecompany’scultureofcontinuousimprovement.
PECOin2008investedarecord$397millioninitscapitalplan,a13percent
increaseovertheyearbefore,tofurtherincreasereliabilityinelectricandnatural
gassystemsthroughouttheregion.Thisincludedthechristeningofa$22million
substationservingindustrial,businessandresidentialcustomersintheSouth
Philadelphiaarea.
PECObuiltonitscommunitypartnerships,donating$500,000totheAfrican-
AmericanMuseuminPhiladelphia,workingwithRadioDisneytobringelectrical
safetymessagestoschoolchildren,andbuilding,inasingledaywithmorethan
200PECOvolunteersworkingintorrentialdownpours,acommunityplayground
nearCollegeville,Pa.,inthenameoffallenPECOlinemanMichaelJ.Killian.
Thecompanyalsocontinuedonitsquesttobecomegreenerbystartingconstruction
ofa“greenroof”atthemainofficebuilding,buildinganenergy-efficientservice
buildinginWestChester,Pa.,andformingapartnershipwithENERGYSTAR®,
promotingenergy-efficientappliancestoitscustomers.PECOalsoattainedthe
ISO14001certificationforitsenvironmentalmanagementsystem,andswitched
itsentirediesel-vehiclefleetovertobio-dieselfuel.Alloftheseinitiativestiein
withExelon’soveralleffortstoreducegreenhousegasemissions–Exelon2020:A
Low-CarbonRoadmap.
PECOanditsapproximately2,400employeesservenearly1.6millionelectric
customersand485,000naturalgascustomersinacombinedserviceterritoryof
approximately2,100squaremiles.PECO’selectricdistributionsystemincludes
closeto13,000circuitmilesofoverheadlinesandmorethan15,000cablemiles
ofundergroundline.PECO’snaturalgasdistributionsystemincludes29gate
stationsandnearly13,000milesofpipeline.PECOdelivered83.7billioncubicfeet
ofnaturalgasand39.4billionkilowatt-hoursofelectricityin2008.
