Bringing Advanced Solutions to Enterprises
In August 2006, the State of Wisconsin became the first state in
the nation to offer advanced communications services over a single
statewide voice, data and video network to schools, colleges, libraries,
museums, tribal nations and other authorized users. Through the new
BadgerNet Converged Network, hundreds of thousands of workers,
students, citizens and businesses now have new choices in how they
communicate, learn and conduct business.
Under a contract awarded by the State of Wisconsin, CenturyTel
and the other members of the Wisconsin BadgerNet Access Alliance
began work in October 2005 to replace three separate networks with a
new communications infrastructure using IP Ethernet technology. The
technology offers proven advantages in cost, scalability and adaptability.
The Move to an IP World
In one of the most complex state communications projects ever
undertaken, CenturyTel installed switches at 517 customer sites, installed
Ethernet switches in 121 central offices and connected 118 independent
communications companies to six newly installed CenturyTel aggrega-
tion nodes. After 10 months of migration work, the new BadgerNet
Converged Network became operational. The new network provides
high-capacity data capability and dynamic bandwidth, up to 1 Gbps,
to support current and emerging applications. As demonstrated with
BadgerNet, CenturyTel is ready to assist each of our enterprise customers
as they evaluate, select and migrate to the technology solutions that
best meet their unique requirements.
