grand prize in environmental reporting from Japan’s Ministry
of the Environment for the Company’s Environmental Sus-
tainability Report 2002. In order to enhance disclosure of
environmental information, Matsushita now reports on the
environmental impact of each of its factories in Japan, as well
as information for each business domain, on the Company’s
Web site.
Love the Earth Citizens’ Campaign
Matsushita provides Groupwide support for the Love the
Earth Citizen’s Campaign, which involves active participa-
tion in home and community environmental activities by
Matsushita employees and their families. The Company is
also making proposals for individual lifestyle reforms,
through the “Conference on ‘Wa-no-kuni’ Lifestyle” spon-
sored by the Japanese Government.
Environment Awards Received in Japan and Overseas
Matsushita was awarded the Minister of Economy, Trade and
Industry Prize of the Green Purchase Awards for environ-
mental communication initiatives to promote green
purchasing, including the actual implementation of green
purchasing and efforts to increase awareness in the communi-
ty. The Company also received the Energy Conservation
Awards for four products, including the Company’s HFC-
free refrigerator, which won the Minister of Economy, Trade
and Industry prize, an air purifier, a room air conditioner and
a metal halide lamp. In addition, Panasonic AVC Networks
Company’s Sendai Plant received the Minister of Economy,
Trade and Industry Prize as a factory that excels in energy
management. These, and other awards, highlight the recogni-
tion Matsushita is receiving for its proactive environmental
initiatives at both product and organizational levels.
In the United States, the Environmental Protection
Agency honored Matsushita for the fifth consecutive year
with the Energy Star Partner of the Year award, in recogni-
tion of the Company’s efforts in promoting energy-efficient
home appliances and for its work with consumer education.
Corporate Citizenship
Activities
From early on in the Company’s history, Matsushita has
been committed to a wide range of activities to create a bet-
ter social environment. Some of these include education to
foster future leaders, support for culture and the arts for the
enrichment of people’s lives, social welfare activities to pro-
mote understanding and compassion, collaboration with
nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and non-government orga-
nizations (NGOs) for the creation of a new society, and
activities focusing on the urgent issue of coexistence with
the global environment.
Specific Activities
In education, Matsushita has long supported Kid Witness
News, an activity in the United States that encourages cre-
ativity and social awareness by providing children with an
opportunity to produce their own video news programs.
The Company has also established foundations and funds
all over the world to support education and recognize aca-
demic achievement. In culture and the arts, Matsushita
supports a wide variety of causes, such as the preservation
of traditional arts, the “Shakespeare for Children Series,”
where children take part in live Shakespearean plays, the
Pacific Music Festival, an international celebration of edu-
cation and music, as well as planning and management of
the Osaka Business Park Arts Project. Furthermore, in
social welfare activities, Matsushita provides assistance to
people with disabilities, while also supporting environ-
mental preservation, and other volunteer activities all over
the world. Recent activities of note include cooperation
with NPOs to establish the Children Supporters Matching
Fund, a grant to ensure healthy development of children,
and the Environment Supporters Matching Fund to
address environmental issues.
