Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. Annual Report 2001 13
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Contributing to Community Well-Being
In fiscal 2001 the Oki Group donated a blood
transport vehicle to the Japan Red Cross Society.
This vehicle will be used to transport donated
blood safely to hospitals. The Group has been
donating such vehicles for five years, an achieve-
ment made possible by monthly donations of
¥100 per employee.
We are also participating in the 2000 Picture
Books Campaign run by the Association for
Sending Picture Books to Lao Children (ASPB).
Even in the Laotian capital Vientiane, bookstores
are few and opportunities for children to become
familiar with the world through picture books are
limited. ASPB donates Japanese picture books
with Lao translations inserted. On July 15, 2000,
Oki Group volunteers prepared 33 such books
and sent them to the ASPB.
In other activities, volunteers from Oki Data
Americas provided assistance with interior paint-
ing services for the Moorestown Ecumenical
Neighborhood Development, Inc., a local United
Way Agency. This social service organization
provides temporary housing for people unable to
afford their own housing.
Oki Group volunteers prepared
picture books with Lao translations
and sent them to the ASPB.
Environmental Conservation
Oki is committed to minimizing the environmen-
tal impact of its activities. Our environmental
conservation activities in fiscal 2001 included the
implementation of energy conservation measures
in our plants and offices as a countermeasure
against global warming. The
introduction of an energy-efficient
cogeneration system in our semi-
conductor plant lowered carbon
dioxide emissions from the plant
by approximately 3%.
Efforts to minimize waste from
our plants and offices continued
to focus on “reducing, reusing
and recycling. We particularly
stressed waste recycling in our semiconductor
plants. As a consequence, waste output
companywide in fiscal 2001 was down 72.0%
from fiscal 1998 levels.
We established a recycling company within
the head office to recycle end-of-life products.
As well as recycling, this company advises
Okis design department on ways to raise
recycling rates.
We have introduced environmental accounting
to accurately assess the results and costs and
enhance the efficiency of envi-
ronmental conservation activities.
As part of our environmental
information disclosure, we have
made the results available in
our 2000 Environmental Report,
which can be seen on our web
site at:
http://www.oki.co.jp/OKI/Home/
English/Profile/index.html.
Our activities have enabled us
to meet the goals for energy
consumption, carbon dioxide
emissions, waste reduction and product recycling
stated in OKI Eco Plan 21, our fiscal 2000
environmental action plan.
In another example, the TUV Rheinland
Product Safety GmbH (TRPS), an affiliate of
the TUV Rheinland/Berlin-Brandenburg, has
awarded the TUV ECO Circle 2000/2001 quality
and environmental test mark to Oki Systems
(Deutschland) GmbH for its new digital C7000-
and C9000-series LED color printers. This is
the first award for color non-impact printers in
the world.
Oki Electric donated a blood transport
vehicle to the Red Cross Society.
