Harvard Business School teaches
MBAs about Henry Schein’s model of
“Doing Well By Doing Good” and the
Company’s “Higher Ambition.”
Harvard Business School published a case
study entitled, “Henry Schein: Doing Well
By Doing Good?” and it served as the basis
for class discussions in two-year MBA and
executive programs at Harvard and other
business schools around the country. The
case study focuses on Henry Schein’s journey
to become a highly successful, values-driven
global health care company and explores
the Company’s culture of care and respect,
deep commitment to corporate social
responsibility, and unique acquisition
model. The inaugural teaching of
Henry Schein’s case study took place at the
2014 Leading with Higher Ambition CEO
Conference and was the basis of discussion
for the participating CEOs and other thought
leaders from around the world, including
former Vice President Al Gore. The annual
conference, organized by the Center for
Higher Ambition Leadership, brings
together select leaders who possess a “higher
ambition”: the belief that organizations can
best realize their potential by creating
long-term economic value, generating wider
benefits for society, and building robust
social capital all at once. Henry Schein is a
founding member of The Center for Higher
Ambition Leadership. Recent studies by
Harvard Business School, Babson College,
and other academic institutions have
demonstrated that firms that prioritize
stakeholder engagement and have a long-
term orientation — two of the key elements
of “higher ambition” companies —
significantly outperform their counterparts
in the stock market over time.
