NORTHEAST UTILITIES ANNUAL REPORT 2005
11
ENSURING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Northern Wood Power Project
Richard Despins Station Manager, Schiller Station
In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, one of the largest renewable energy projects
in the country is nearly complete. PSNH’s Northern Wood Power Project is an
innovative approach to power generation, replacing a coal-fired boiler with one
that will burn regionally harvested wood chips and other clean, low-grade wood
products. In February 2006, the project reached a major milestone when it
received its first delivery of over 80 tons of wood chips for equipment testing.
When operational in the second half of 2006, Schiller Station will burn
approximately 400,000 tons of wood chips annually.
Schiller Station’s new 50-MW, state-of-the-art boiler will deliver valuable
benefits for New England: it will economically produce cleaner electric energy
from a renewable resource which displaces the use of fossil fuels, will reduce
thousands of tons of emissions into the environment each year and will add
$20 million to New Hampshire’s economy. The Northern Wood Power Project
is a real win for our customers, our shareholders and New Hampshire’s
economy and natural environment.”
