Broadcast
In our broadcast business, many customers are upgrading their facilities from analog production
pipelines to integrated digital workflows. By Avid’s estimates, this global conversion trend –
which has been unfolding since the turn of the millennium – is approximately 25%-30% complete,
leaving ample room for growth as more and more broadcasters embrace the concept of the
“tapeless” newsroom in the years ahead.
While Avid has traditionally pursued this conversion opportunity with an end-to-end broadcast
production pipeline, in the past year we have enhanced our offerings with industry-leading on-air
graphics systems that we acquired through our 2005 purchase of Pinnacle Systems, Inc. The
addition of these products – which include the Deko®and Thunder®families – allows us to target
broadcast customers with an increasingly rich set of integrated tools that meet their growing needs.
Shared Storage
One of the factors fueling the broadcast industry trend toward digital end-to-end newsrooms is
the rise of advanced, shared-storage networks that consolidate every aspect of collaborative
production in IT-based infrastructures. This process begins with the ingest and logging of media,
and ends with final playout and archiving of digital assets. Throughout the process, editors,
engineers, news directors, and station managers can take advantage of the dynamic power
of real-time shared storage to create, edit, approve, and archive news content for on-air
broadcast under intense deadlines.
This type of workflow has become essential to the creation, management, and delivery of
news programming, particularly among enterprise-class facilities whose networks continue
to grow in size and complexity. Avid has staked out a leadership position in this industry
with intelligent, fault-tolerant shared storage systems that can handle massive volumes
of data, and aredesigned to scale with the needs of the customer.
