Many people ask me, “Why did you leave Fiji? It’s such a beautiful place!” My answer is
always the same: “I want to grow and develop. I want to grab the American Dream.
This April, my husband Sam and I will be celebrating 10 years as ServiceMaster Clean
franchisees. We’ve gone from running the business out of our home to operating it from
a 7,400 square foot facility in Stockton, California. We are blessed with ServiceMaster in
our lives. We have built a wonderful life and I want to help others grab the same dream.
One of my employees came to us six years ago when he was 18. He started as a cleaning
tech and today he’s a crew chief. I saw in him a willingness to learn and an eagerness to
go the extra mile. I want him to advance even more in the business and I’ve shared this
with him. When you have a rising star, it’s important to share your hopes and help them
see the things they might not see in themselves. They must feel your trust and
confidence in them.
We enter people’s lives during very emotional and vulnerable times. Perhaps their
house has been flooded or damaged by fire. Whether it’s on the phone or at the home,
our employees have to be at their very best during the first contact with the customer.
For this reason, we’re very selective in who we hire and diligent in how we train and
develop them.
I have a very diverse workforce with different ethnic backgrounds. We had a teacher,
who came to our facility to teach English as a second language to our employees. One
of the training sessions I’ve personally delivered is goal setting and budgeting. When
my employees are successful both in and out of work, then I am successful.
In Fiji, my parents helped families who were unable to send their children to school by
paying their school “fees.” Like my parents, I just can’t step back when I see opportunities
to help. When I see that something or someone can be better, I feel compelled to help.
Helping others be their best extends beyond our employees. Our two sons, Alvin and
Reggie, have joined the business. They know a lot, but there is so much more to teach them
so they’ll be ready for the day when the business is theirs.
