2014 Summary Annual Report
yBenicia and the Bill Greehey East and
West reneries in Corpus Christi received
re-approval as Voluntary Protection Program
Star Sites in 2014, the highest safety
designation of the U.S. Occupational Safety
and Health Administration and aliated state
agencies. Valero’s reneries in Ardmore,
Okla., and Three Rivers, as well as the
company’s Corpus Christi asphalt terminal,
were recommended for Star Site re-approval.
yValero received several “Stars Among Stars”
awards from OSHA in 2014, for low incident
rates compared with industry averages.
The Houston renery and Bill Greehey East
renery earned “Star of Excellence Awards”
for rates at least 90 percent below industry
averages.
yValero Renewables ethanol plants won
several awards in 2014. The Albion, Neb.,
plant earned awards from the National Safety
Council and the Nebraska Chapter of the
National Safety Council; the Fort Dodge,
Safe and reliable operations are key factors in
driving company protability. As a result, Valero
set a course to adopt a formal management
structure to standardize operations, its
Commitment to Excellence Management
System (CTEMS), with the goal of becoming
best-in-industry in all areas.
“Our business objective continues, simply, to be
the best operator in the rening industry,” said
Lane Riggs, Executive Vice President-Rening
Operations and Engineering.
Valero made some impressive strides in 2014.
The company established a record-low renery
employee injury rate of 0.42 incidents per
200,000 working hours, while its combined
employee and contractor rate of 0.43 also was
a new low – and less than half the industry
average.
Occupational and process safety is Valero’s
No. 1 priority.
“We want to make sure that our plants are safe
for everyone working in and around them,”
Riggs said, “and that neighborhoods and
communities do not need to be concerned
because of how we operate. We want our
employees and contractors to go home safely
to their families every day.”
In other highlights:
yValero received 10 safety awards
from American Fuel & Petrochemical
Manufacturers, the industry’s major trade
association, in 2014. Reneries at Corpus
Christi, Houston, McKee, and Three Rivers in
Texas, St. Charles in Louisiana, and Benicia
and Wilmington Asphalt in California were
honored.
