26 TRUE VALUE 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
UNIFIED FOCUS FOR A
It all comes down to the children.
They are the living embodiment of
the future of our society and our
world. Everything the True Value
Foundation does can be seen
through that lens. We make an
impact in two areascommunity
vitality and education.
Community vitality
We work to improve kids’ quality of life
through safe housing and revitalized
schools and neighborhoods. Each
year at our Spring and Fall Reunion,
True Value retailers, suppliers and
associates get together to work on
a Habitat for Humanity® project—
over the past five years alone, we’ve
provided thousands of volunteer hours
in community service through this
and other volunteer work. Suppliers
donate truckloads of merchandise
after Reunion for resale at Habitat’s
ReStores® in host cities. And through
our national Painting a Brighter FutureSM
grant program, we have awarded paint
to more than 400 schools in need,
covering more than 6.2 million square
feet of classroom walls.
Education
We’re helping kids to thrive, providing
educational and practical support
through associate and member
scholarships, the United Way and
the Boys and Girls Clubs of America
(BGCA). The co-op has a 30-year
relationship with the Boys and Girls
Clubs of Chicago, dating back to
founder John Cotters commitment
to helping inner-city youth prosper.
True Value has helped keep the
Cotter Boys and Girls Club a safe
haven for thousands of youth through
millions of dollars of support from
the True Value vendor community
over the years.
In 2014, we announced a national
partnership with the BGCA to unify
our focus and make an even greater
difference. The foundation is working
with a small group of True Value
retailers in 2014 to help kids in need
in their communities through support
of local clubs.
The partnership’s initial goal is to
create a model for wider True Value
retailer involvement in their local Boys
and Girls Clubs in 2015 and beyond.
The BGCA offers many opportunities
for True Value retailer participation,
including mentoring, donating
supplies for aftercare programs,
staff involvement in fundraisers and
much more. The bottom line? Reach
more kids!
True Value Foundation is honing its mission
to make a greater differencefocusing its
resources on improving the lives of children in the
communities we serve.
