18 TRUE VALUE 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
Free to
grow.
We wanted a partner
willing to go with us to any
market we wanted to serve.
No restrictions on where
we can open a store. That
partner turned out to be
True Value.”
AL FANSLER, FAMILY FARM & HOME
Michigan-based Family Farm
& Home is True Value’s newest
member. With 28 stores and
counting, this family-owned
chain switched from another
hardware partner to better
support expansion plans.
Al Fansler knows how to grow a
retail business. He spent many years
working with a well-known farm store
chain, eventually becoming president,
until the founding family sold the
business in 1999. During his time
there, the enterprise grew from 15 to
114 stores in seven states. He started
Family Farm & Home with his son and
son-in-law in 2002.
We’re a farm store first and foremost,”
says Al. “But hardware is very important
to us. True Value had the selection,
expertise and flexibility we needed.
And they’ve done a great job.” Family
Farm & Home has an ambitious growth
strategy, with plans to open four new
locations per year. “We want to grow,”
Al says. “It’s no fun treading water.”
Our kind of guy.
