Share gains in the Japanese market
were recorded in such small appliances
as microwave ovens, rice cookers and vacuum
cleaners. Toshiba reinforced its leadership of the
vacuum cleaner market with the March 2000 launch
of an exhaust-free model.
Enhanced efficiency also underpinned a May
1999 agreement with AB Electrolux, the major
European appliance manufacturer, to collaborate in
household appliances. The two companies will
cooperate in such areas as technology exchanges,
product development, product and parts sourcing

Egypt, Toshiba has a technology sharing agree-
ment for refrigerators with El-Araby Co. Similar
agreements exist with Xian Changling Refrigerator
Co., Ltd., GD Midea Holding Co., Ltd. and
Shangdong Xiaoya Group Co., Ltd. in China,
positioning Toshiba to make inroads in the
home-appliance markets of the Middle East,
Africa and China.
