INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Hitachi’s Intellectual Property Group supports business strategy from an intellectual
property (IP) standpoint. Hitachi’s fundamental IP strategies are: (1) Globalization of IP
activity, (2) Maximizing the contribution of IP to business, (3) Strengthening Hitachi
Group IP collaboration, and (4) Promoting international standardization activities.
(1) Globalization of IP Activity
The Intellectual Property Group is currently pursuing a patent filing plan that calls for
the number of overseas patent applications of the Hitachi Group to surpass domestic
patent applications by fiscal 2010, thus leading the way in the global development of
business. As a result, in fiscal 2009, the ratio of overseas applications to total appli-
cations reached 47%. In fiscal 2010, we intend to accelerate the filing of patent
applications overseas, particularly in emerging countries, using international patent
applications under PCT*1.
According to internal data, the Hitachi Group placed sixth in 2009 in terms of the
number of U.S. issued patents. In 2010 and thereafter, the Hitachi Group is deter-
mined to maintain a patent portfolio that is the equal of any other company engaged
in the social innovation business. Furthermore, we will support Group business
advancement in emerging countries by shifting our focus in overseas patent applica-
tions from Europe and the U.S. to emerging countries.
*1 PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty)
(2) Maximizing the Contribution of IP to Business
The contribution of IP to business comes in many forms depending on the nature of a
business, including differentiation, securing a degree of freedom for business, and
income from patent licensing fees. Whatever the case, we believe that it is important to
build a high-quality patent portfolio attuned to business strategy. Therefore, Hitachi
promotes flagship patent activities to leverage the Hitachi Group’s strengths and at the
same time is concentrating on acquiring rights to technologies that can differentiate the
Hitachi Group. Meanwhile, patent portfolio management activities try to cultivate patents
related to selected themes worldwide with the aim of building a patent portfolio that can
contribute to current and future businesses. In fiscal 2009, we worked to create a patent
portfolio for supporting the Social Innovation Business, including Green IT. In fiscal 2010,
we will continue to pursue activities around themes centered on the Social Innovation
Business, such as in the field fusing information and telecommunication systems and
power and industrial systems, and in the environmental technology field.
(3) Strengthening Hitachi Group IP Collaboration
Hitachi is promoting a Hitachi Group Patent Pool Model. This model integrates
management of invention creation, patent application and patent utilization within the
Hitachi Group.
(4) Promoting International Standardization Activities
International standardization activities are also important from the standpoint of global
business development. Hitachi has established the Hitachi Group Standardization
Committee, which is conducting integrated activities across the Hitachi Group. To further
promote this drive, Hitachi has also established the International Standardization Office in
the Intellectual Property Group. These bodies are strengthening cooperation among
business divisions and Group companies in international standardization activities.
Specifically, they are supporting standardization in important themes that cut across
several Hitachi Group business divisions such as environmental technology. In addition,
they are formulating guidelines, such as for the handling of IP, sharing information and
conducting educational activities relating to standardization on a Group-wide basis.
