Over the past five years,
Fifth Third Bank’s corporate,
foundation and employee
contributions to the United
Way have totaled $50.3
million, including $9 million
contributed in 2007.
Community Giving
The
FoundationOfceatFifthThirdBank
administersgrantsonbehalfoftheFifth
ThirdFoundationandothercharitable
trustsandfoundationsforwhichthe
Bankservesastrusteeoragent.In2007,
theFifthThirdFoundationmade576
grantstotalingmorethan$4.3millionin
theareasofartsandculture,community
development,education,andhealthand
humanservices.TheFoundationfunded
17collegescholarshipsof$2,500eachto
childrenofFifthThirdBankemployees
andmatchedmorethan$118,400in
employees’personalgiftstoinstitutions
ofhighereducation.
FifthThird’sCommunityDevelopment
Corporation(CDC)investsinlow-
incomehousing,historictaxcredits
andeconomicdevelopmentprojects
tosupportcommunityrevitalizationin
neighborhoodsthroughoutourfootprint.
OurCommunityAffairsdepartment
workswiththeafliatesandlines
ofbusinesstopromotelending
anddevelopmentopportunitiesin
traditionallyunderservedmarkets,such
asethnicallydiverse,urbanandlow-to
moderate-incomecensustracts.This
groupalsochampionsnancialliteracy
byprovidinghomebuyertraining,credit
counselingandcollegesavingsprograms,
and,throughtheimplementationof
theYoungBankersClub,anationally
recognizedprogramthatpromotes
nancialliteracyinelementaryschools
acrossourfootprint.Sinceitsinception
inCincinnatiin2004,theYoungBankers
ClubhasexpandedtoColumbus,
Chicago,GrandRapids,Indianapolis
andWestVirginia.
In2007,retiredbusinessownerand
philanthropistJoanR.“Joni”Herschede
passedawaysuddenlyattheageof67.
JoniservedasamemberoftheFifth
ThirdBancorpboardofdirectorsfor
morethan16years.Shealsoservedon
theboard’sAuditandTrustcommittees
andwasamemberandmostrecentchair
oftheCharlotteR.SchmidlappFund,
forwhichtheBankservesastrustee.In
addition,shewasamemberoftheBank’s
CommunityAdvisoryForum,agroupof
Cincinnatibusinessleaderswhoprovide
adviceandinputtoFifthThirdBankon
issuesfacingGreaterCincinnati.
Joniwasacommunityadvocate,tireless
volunteerandgenerousphilanthropist.
Wewerethebeneciariesofher
guidance,counselandunwavering
commitmenttoFifthThird.Shewillbe
greatlymissed.
