Finding and developing new supplies and products to bring to market
ExxonMobil’s scientists and engineers
are creating innovative technologies
to develop otherwise inaccessible
or uneconomic hydrocarbons.
Unconventional resources such as
liquefied natural gas, tight gas, shale
gas, and heavy oil will be needed to
help meet the world’s growing demand
for energy.

The world’s need for reliable, affordable energy
supplies is growing. Meeting this challenge will require
substantial investments, access to resources, and
new technologies to unlock these resources from
increasingly challenging locations.
By 2030 global energy demand is expected to increase
by about 30 percent from today’s level, even assuming
significant gains in energy efficiency. Oil and natural
gas will remain the world’s primary energy sources,
meeting close to 60 percent of the demand.
ExxonMobil plans to invest more than $125 billion over
the next five years developing future energy supplies
and investing in the communities in which we operate,
while at the same time reducing the environmental
impact of what we do.
Technology is crucial to supplying more of the energy
that we need with less impact on the environment.
For example ExxonMobil’s researchers have developed
a technology called R3M. This technology allows us
to interpret the earths electromagnetic waves to help
geoscientists find crude oil and natural gas hidden far
below the surface.
