MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION Annual Report 2001 [37]
jointly developing and producing the Z-
Car, a compact and strategic world car.
Asia and Oceania
THAILAND:
Total auto sales in Thailand surged 20%
to 253,000 units during 2000, although
the momentum was somewhat hurt by
indications of an economic slowdown,
which by midyear had begun to cast its
shadow over the market. MMC sold
28,000 unitsa jump of 65% over the
previous yearthanks to the new L200
double cab pickup truck. MMCs share
of the Thai market also grew to 11%
from the previous years 8%.
PHILIPPINES:
Total market sales in the Philippines
grew 13%, coming in at 81,000 units for
2000. Propelled by the strong perfor-
mance of the L300 and the PAJERO,
sales of MMC models rose to 15,000
units (up 3% from the previous year),
thus enabling MMC to maintain the
number-two spot next to Toyota in the
countrys auto market. MMCs share,
however, dropped to 19% from the 21%
share it enjoyed in 1999.
INDONESIA:
The automobile market in Indonesia
saw total sales soar 226% to 262,000
units during 2000, as many consumers
who had withheld new car purchases
in the wake of economic crisis were
encouraged by the subsequent recovery
and started to purchase new cars. MMC
sold 42,000 units in Indonesia, up 158%
year on year. However, MMCs share
was reduced from the previous year’s
20% to 16%. This was due mainly to in-
creased competition resulting from
model changes and new launches by
other automobile manufacturers.
MALAYSIA:
Total car sales in Malaysia grew 19% to
332,000 units in 2000. PROTONthe
Malaysian automobile manufacturer
in which MMC has an equity stake
also enjoyed rising sales, growing 18%
to 179,000 units. PROTON-brand models
continue to enjoy the lions share (54%)
of that countrys automobile market.
CHINA:
Total market sales in China grew 14%
over the previous year, reaching
1,882,000 units in 2000.
Reflecting the immense popularity of
the PAJERO brand in China, 70% of the
5,000 completed cars exported from
Japan were the new PAJERO models.
