I am the face of an emerging market.
While Medtronic has been doing business in Asia for more
than 30 years, we recently began a new era of tackling
chronic disease in the region by making signicant
investments in facilities and educational programs.
There is demand for both medical products and
knowledge. Our eorts include several innovative ways
to help train physicians and increase public awareness
about how to treat chronic diseases. Key initiatives include:

Singapore is an ideal location for manufacturing
because of its skilled labor pool and central location,
which makes distribution ecient and cost-eective.
Initially, 120 employees are producing cardiac devices,
and we expect to produce other devices here in the
future. We also opened an education center, where
500 physicians a year are gaining hands-on experience
with the latest technologies.

The Chinese government awarded us regional
headquarters status, giving us a higher-level platform
for further development in this growing market. It
includes a state-of-the-art training facility, where
9,000 physicians a year gain hands-on experience
through a virtual cath lab, surgical room, and
training courses. We also are exploring electronic
training capabilities to better serve the many remote
areas of China. Today, the Shanghai facility houses
600employees, and we expect to add 1,000 more in
the next veyears.

We opened this hands-on education center in 2010 to
help Chinese patients better understand the therapies
available to them. Working with physicians and
Medtronic representatives, patients get to see and touch
the latest medical technologies through multimedia
and 3-D models. The facility has been so successful that
several hospitals have asked us to set up similar centers
in their facilities.

Largely driven by cardiovascular disease and diabetes
epidemics in India, we’re rapidly increasing our eorts in
the country. We moved into a new, larger headquarters
in 2011 and will be adding more than 500 employees
over the next ve years. We also plan to train more than
4,000implanters and surgeons in that time through
advanced training centers and hospital workshops.
Nowhere is the issue of chronic disease more pressing than in Asia. It
accounts for eight of every 10 deaths, and the economic strain threatens
to undermine development of many emerging markets. To help reduce the
burden of chronic disease, we’re collaborating with local governments and
communities to make advanced medical therapies more accessible, and to
train doctors how to use them.
