Salaries, wages & benefits expenses increased by $65.2 million to $2.1 billion in FY 2013, compared
with FY 2012, primarily because of contractual wage increases and an increase in our pension and
other post-employment benefits expense which increased as a result of increased claims and an
increase in the trend rate.
Train operations expenses increased by $26.3 million to $272.0 million in FY 2013, compared with
FY 2012, primarily from higher incentive payments made to host railroads for adherence to
scheduled departure and arrival times.
Fuel, power and utilities expenses increased by $14.8 million to $370.1 million in FY 2013, compared
with FY 2012, primarily due to a reduction in the benefit received from fuel hedge contracts.
Materials expenses decreased by $19.8 million to $187.3 million in FY 2013, compared with FY 2012,
primarily because of increased costs of component parts produced for inventory (and therefore
capitalized). The decrease was partially offset by materials purchased in support of the Michigan
Line track improvements.
Facility, communication, and office-related expenses increased by $6.4 million to $181.9 million in
FY 2013, compared with FY 2012, primarily because of increased station rent and facility
maintenance expenses.
Advertising and sales expenses increased by $16.5 million to $95.0 million in FY 2013, compared
with FY 2012, primarily because of a significant increase in the amount spent on Acela Express and
sport and entertainment advertising in FY 2013.
Casualty and other claims expenses increased by $17.5 million to $67.4 million in FY 2013, compared
with FY 2012, primarily as a result of an increase in the reserve for an accident involving an Amtrak
