NEC train ridership decreased by 0.2% while ticket revenues increased by 5.3% in FY 2013,
compared with FY 2012. Ridership and ticket revenue suffered in most markets in the north end of the
NEC in FY 2013, especially the Boston/Philadelphia and New York City/Boston endpoints. Several
service disruptions, including Super Storm Sandy (“Sandy”), which disrupted travel in October and
November 2012, caused a significant impact to ridership. However, revenue increased as a result of
several fare actions in FY 2013 along with additional route frequencies in the NEC.
SD routes train ridership and ticket revenues increased by 2.2% and 4.4%, respectively, in FY 2013,
compared with FY 2012. Most routes on this business line experienced continued positive growth
throughout FY 2013, especially the Keystone, Chicago-St. Louis, Pacific Surfliner and San Joaquin
routes. However, several routes, such as the Cascades and Pere Marquette, suffered declines in
ridership and ticket revenue as a result of competition from low-cost bus services.
