Gauging Our EHS Sustainability Performance
Amtrak EHS Annual Report 2010 | 43
Santa Barbara Car Free Project: Amtrak was a founding partner in the
Santa Barbara Car Free Project, which received a national Clean Air Excellence
Award from the U.S. EPA in a Washington, DC, ceremony in May of 2010. Project
partners included dozens of area businesses committed to promoting clean air and
a healthier planet by making it easier for people to visit Santa Barbara without their
cars. The project website provides detailed information on walking tours,
transportation options, and how to plan a car-free itinerary. More than 100
business partners provide discounts and promotions on travel, restaurants, and
events. Amtrak’s initial support and continued involvement have been instrumental
in making this project a success, according to Mary Byrd, project manager for the
Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District.
