ServiceMaster 7
We are committed to owning and renewing these values. Today, we strive to
genuinely connect with our customers as real people so that we may better
serve them where they live and where they work. At the same time, we want our
service technicians to feel the dignity and respect that is their right. In the
coming years, we will put more substance behind our words. Just as we equip
our people to be more effective in their jobs, we will also equip them to effectively
live our values.
We are blessed to have as an ally and resource the President of The Avodah Institute,
David Miller. The Avodah Institute exists to help leaders integrate the claims of
their faith with the demands of their work, and David offers some excellent
thoughts on that subject in his essay, Faith and the Workplace, which we are
pleased to publish in this report following the overview of our brands.
board renewal
Several years ago, before the current management team was assembled, the
ServiceMaster Board of Directors decided to renew itself. Its members looked at
some of their long tenures and close associations that had been developed over
the years. They looked at how many of them had come from the executive ranks
of The ServiceMaster Company. More recently, they looked at the historic leg of
the journey that was completed in 2001 when we sold Management Services,
our institutional business, and became Americas Service Brands for Home and
Business. They believed it was a time for new skills and sensitivities at the
board level. And so they began the renewal process. There would be fewer
directors, and no more than two at any one time would be present or former officers
of the company.
Two new directors were elected in January 2003. They are:
Betty Jane Scheihing, Senior Vice President, Office of the President, Arrow
Electronics Inc. Her areas of expertise include information technology, logistics,
business integrations and management development.
Roberto R. Herencia, President, Banco Popular North America and Executive
Vice President and Head of North America Operations for Popular, Inc.
His areas of expertise include corporate finance, investment, operations and
market expansion.
We welcome them for who they are and for what they will help us become.
Retiring from the Board in 2003 was a significant part of our heritage in the
minds and souls of C. William Pollard, Carlos H. Cantu, Vincent C. Nelson and
Charles W. Stair. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Michelle Hunt
who is not seeking reelection this year. They are giants in our world and we will
miss their guidance and counsel.
