a new mutual fund trade management and accounting
system to achieve enhanced process efficiencies and
eliminate operational risks.

n Workplace benefits – Our annual search for The
Principal® 10 Best Companies for Employee Financial
Security highlights best practices in employee benefits.
n Financial well-being – For 10 years The Principal
Financial Well-Being IndexSM has identified trends in
consumer financial well-being, retirement planning, employee
benefits and workplace trends on a quarterly basis.
n Retirement confidence – Conducted by the Employee
Benefit Research Institute and sponsored by The
Principal, the annual Retirement Confidence Survey
examines the attitudes and behavior of U.S. employees/
retirees toward all aspects of long-term financial security.
n Retirement savings trends – The Total View 2009 offers
a look at retirement savings trends, based on data from
plans we service as well as third-party research.
n 403(b) trends – New research from the Profit Sharing/
401k Council of America, sponsored by The Principal,
gives insight into the impact of economic conditions on
403(b) plans and the increasing role of target-date funds.

n Green investment fund – The Principal Green
Property Fund is a closed-end, commingled fund
sponsored and managed by Principal Real Estate Investors.
Currently, the Green Fund is focused primarily on
opportunities to acquire and reposition existing U.S.
properties that are designed to achieve Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified status.
n Environmentally friendly buildings – As of February 2010,
The Principal had earned ENERGY STAR certification
for seven of 10 properties owned and occupied by
the company. We’re working toward all 10 properties
being certified in 2010. In addition, The Principal Child
Development Center earned a LEED Gold certification
from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2009.
n Environmentally friendly projects – The Principal Riverwalk,
a community improvement project along the banks of the
Des Moines River, ties together many amenities that
emphasize and preserve the natural habitat. Working with
the State Department of Natural Resources, the project
encourages outdoor recreation through pedestrian and
bicycle paths, parks and plazas.
