Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. Annual Report 2003 11
Manufacturing and Service Businesses
EMS Business
In fiscal 2003, by expanding the number of customers served
in our electronics manufacturing services (EMS) business, we
were able to achieve huge sales growth in this area. With
Ceramission Co., Ltd., of Kawasaki, we also jointly developed
a new ceramic coating with heat sink properties, called
“Cerac α.” We have launched an EMS business utilizing this
ceramic coating, encompassing product development, produc-
tion and quality guarantee. Since commencing this business
in January 2003, we have received inquiries from over 200
companies. By adding this new field, we expect our EMS
business to continue strong sales growth in fiscal 2004 onward.
Support Service Business
In the customer support services business, we were particularly
active in receiving equipment and software vendor certification,
to ensure seamless support services for our customers. In fiscal
2003, we had over 1,000 engineers in the support services
business alone with IT-related certification in the server
and network areas. This allowed us to offer a one-stop
support system encompassing a wide variety of specialist
skills—from hardware to software, and from information to
telecommunications.
We also focused on our IT Management Service, which
covers systems operation and management. As well as inte-
grating a broad range of services, such as server monitoring
and network diagnostics, this service provides service level
management (SLM) based on the IT Infrastructure Library*
(ITIL). We also provide customers with real-time system
monitoring and reporting via the Web. In fiscal 2003, the
service doubled its sales compared with the previous period.
In the future, these services will focus on such key areas as
outsourcing services and multivendor support, with particular
emphasis on expanding network-related services. We will also
strive to fully meet the needs of ATM networks in the lead-up
to the issuance of the new bank notes.
*ITIL
ITIL is a comprehensive set of publicly available guidelines developed by
the British government on the planning, provision and support of IT
services. ITIL describes the architecture for establishing and operating
IT service management.
Oki’s exclusively developed P2ROM™
products boast a similar price to mask
ROMs but with a delivery time of as
short as one day. This advantage has
bolstered the reputation of P2ROM™
among makers of electronic
dictionaries and other products.
The 10 Gbps optical receiver module is an
essential component of high-speed optical
networks that will form the basis of future
broadband communications.
The network monitoring and diagnostics service of Oki Customer
Adtech operates round-the-clock, offering a one-stop lineup of services.
principal component in high-speed optical communications
systems, features a high-responsivity, high-speed positive-
intrinsic-negative (PIN) photodiode as well as a wide-
bandwidth, low-noise transimpedance amplifier (TIA). In
addition to responding to the need for compact and MSA-
compliant optical receiver modules, it incorporates Oki’s
distinctive side-illuminated mirror PIN photodiode (SMPD),
which features high responsivity and high-frequency
response. Beginning with this module—an essential
component of high-speed optical networks that will
form the basis of future broadband communica-
tions—we intend to focus on expanding our
business in this field.
