When I announced my retirement in September, I had
the opportunity to reflect upon the 18 years I have
worked at Express Scripts. What strikes me most is that
the purpose for Express Scripts always remained the
same: in 1986 when we started, in 1998 when I joined
and still today in 2016.
Our mission, improving health outcomes while driving
down costs, is as relevant as ever. In our 30-year
history, we have consistently set the bar for what
it means to successfully address the high costs of
prescription drugs while improving health outcomes.
Providing quality care and cost-effective access to
medicine don't happen on their own.
It takes passionate people who are dedicated to our
patients. I am proud of our 26,000 colleagues who
help 85 million people successfully navigate one of the
most complex healthcare environments in the world. I
am proud of our pharmacists, nurses, physicians and
healthcare professionals who use their specialized
knowledge to give the best care possible. I am proud of
our account teams and clinicians who partner with our
3,000 clients to design specific solutions to minimize
costs while taking into consideration the demographics
and specific needs of the client’s members.
Our business cards say that we work
for Express Scripts, but in reality we
work for patients and clients.
When we improve the patient experience while meeting
client needs – improving health outcomes while
controlling costs – we optimize shareholder value.
This is our model of alignment which has withstood
the test of time.
When we construct a formulary, design a benefit plan
or consult with a client, we build solutions around what
is best for a patient. Whether it is a soldier serving our
country while stationed halfway around the world; a
chronically ill patient with a rare disease being treated
by experts from our Accredo® specialty pharmacy; or a
parent picking up a prescription at a retail pharmacy
counter for their child, Express Scripts is there,
standing with our patients and clients to ensure they
get the most value from their medicine.
I knew when I joined Express Scripts 18 years ago that
we could create something special. I am humbled that
our company has helped so many patients live better,
and will continue to do so for years to come.
I am proud to have served as Chairman and CEO over
the past decade. It is a privilege to turn over the CEO
reins to Tim Wentworth. He has a deep understanding
of our industry and is dedicated to our patients, clients
and shareholders. As Chairman of the Board, I look
forward to continue working with Tim as he takes
Express Scripts to new levels of achievement.
To our shareholders, I say thank you for believing in us,
investing in us and allowing us do the important work of
making prescription drugs safer and more affordable for
millions of patients in need.
Sincerely,
George Paz
Chairman and CEO
Express Scripts Holding Company
Patients first. Yesterday, today and tomorrow.
