ComEd, PECO and BGE have identified sites where former MGP activities have or may have resulted in actual site contamination. For
almost all of these sites, there are additional PRPs that may share responsibility for the ultimate remediation of each location.
• ComEd has identified 42 sites, 17 of which have been remediated and approved by the Illinois EPA or the U.S. EPA and 25 that are
currently under some degree of active study and/or remediation. ComEd expects the majority of the remediation at these sites to
continue through at least 2020.
• PECO has identified 26 sites, 16 of which have been remediated in accordance with applicable PA DEP regulatory requirements. The
remaining 10 sites are currently under some degree of active study and/or remediation. PECO expects the majority of the remediation at
these sites to continue through at least 2021.
• BGE has identified 13 former gas manufacturing or purification sites that it currently owns or owned at one time through a predecessor’s
acquisition. Two gas manufacturing sites require some level of remediation and ongoing monitoring under the direction of the MDE. The
required costs at these two sites are not considered material. An investigation of an additional gas purification site was completed during
the first quarter of 2015 at the direction of the MDE. For more information, see the discussion of the Riverside site below.
ComEd, pursuant to an ICC order, and PECO, pursuant to settlements of natural gas distribution rate cases with the PAPUC, are currently
recovering environmental remediation costs of former MGP facility sites through customer rates. See Note 3—Regulatory Matters for additional
information regarding the associated regulatory assets. BGE is authorized to recover, and is currently recovering, environmental costs for the
remediation of the former MGP facility sites from customers; however, while BGE does not have a rider for MGP clean-up costs, BGE has
historically received recovery of actual clean-up costs in distribution rates. ComEd, PECO and BGE have recorded regulatory assets for the
recovery of these costs.
As of December 31, 2015 and 2014, the Registrants had accrued the following undiscounted amounts for environmental liabilities in Other
current liabilities and Other deferred credits and other liabilities within their respective Consolidated Balance Sheets:
