In an effort to reach more women, our new Women’s Solaire line
was featured in a segment on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” with
Harry Connick Jr. Each member of the studio audience was given
a new set of clubs to take home, effectively seeding new product
within our target market and generating valuable publicity.
Another promising sign is that golfers’ passion for the game remains alive and well.
Despite the terrible economy, rounds played in the U.S. were essentially flat in 2009 from
the previous year. So even if golfers weren’t spending as much on new equipment, they
were still hitting courses in healthy numbers.
There’s no doubt that Callaway Golf faced an unprecedented series of obstacles in 2009,
but we have emerged a leaner, more resilient Company better able to deal with adversity.
And despite the pressure that comes with tough economic challenges, we have created
a great place to work, as evidenced by Callaway Golf being presented with the Grand
Prize at the 10th Annual San Diego SHRM Workplace Excellence Awards.
Legendary author and humorist Mark Twain once said, “The miracle, or the power, that
elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the
prompting of a brave, determined spirit.”
The determined spirit that was instilled when our Company was founded runs as deep
as ever. And we’re just as committed to helping make every golfer a better golfer today
as Ely Callaway was 27 years ago.
I would like to thank all of our employees for their invaluable contributions, our retail
partners for their continued support of our brands, and our loyal consumers who
proudly make Callaway Golf products a part of their active lifestyle. And I extend my
sincere gratitude to you, our shareholders, for trusting and believing in us during such
a trying year.
George Fellows
President and Chief Executive Officer
