inclusion, with favorability up from 88% in 2013 to 91%
in 2014.
The Staples Supplier Diversity Mentorship Program,
now in its sixth year, promotes professional and
business development among diverse business
enterprises. Staples is also an active supporter of several

ENVIRONMENT
At Staples, our vision is to generate business and environmental
benefits — for ourselves, our customers and our communities
— by leading the way in sustainable business practices. We’re
working to achieve this vision through a continued focus on
sourcing more sustainable products; improving our offering
of recycling and other green services; maximizing our energy
efficiency and renewable energy use to reduce our climate
impacts; and eliminating waste.
In 2014, we continued to make progress towards our
global sustainability goals. Highlights of contributing
accomplishments include:
Globally, we offer more than 12,000 products with
environmental attributes in our stores and online,
representing more than $5.7 billion in annual sales.
We have industry leading customer recycling programs
for ink and toner cartridges and electronics. In 2014, we
helped our customers recycle more than 60 million ink and
toner cartridges across our markets. We also expanded
our US technology recycling program to include our
Contract customers, and collected more than 26 million
pounds of electronics globally for responsible recycling.
We continued to roll out right-size packaging technology
in the US and Europe. In the US, the Smart-size
technology has been launched in more than 75% of our
distribution centers, and in Europe we have 12 active
Jivaro machines.
We remain focused on energy efficiency through our
renewable energy initiatives. In 2014, our US solar
installations generated 4,660,000 kWh of solar power,
and we ended the year with 645 buildings certified to the
ENERGY STAR standard.
The ISO14001 Environmental Management System
standard is held in 112 facilities across Staples
International in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, Ireland,
China, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
