As a final note, my review of 2004 wouldn’t be complete without paying tribute to Staples’
founder, Tom Stemberg. Tom is the rare entrepreneur who had both the genius to launch a
great idea that transformed an industry and the ability to grow a business from its inception
to a multi-billion dollar company, creating extraordinary shareholder value in the process.
Since founding the office products superstore industry in 1986, Tom built a thriving
business and a strong team, and inspired us to emulate his passion, his drive, and his
appetite for innovation. Although he has decided to leave our Board of Directors to devote
his time to a new career in the venture capital world, Tom’s legacy lives on at Staples.
Never complacent, Tom was instrumental in creating the strong culture that is the
foundation of our success. As Chairman Emeritus, his role as a valued mentor and hero to
countless Staples associates will continue for many years to come.
