Dear Fellow Shareholders,
Headsets are exciting! We see a future where people will use a headset to talk on their
telephone, PC, or mobile phone and reach other people, obtain information, and issue
instructions. Talking hands free is more efficient and comfortable.The sound quality and
ergonomic design of Plantronics headsets can bring people the benefits that speech
recognition and wireless technology make possible. In the mobile, digital era, the headset
will be the key communication tool providing freedom to move around, freedom to use
your hands, freedom from dial pads, and freedom from keyboards. In recognition of this
opportunity, we have focused our resources on creating the right new products and
marketing them to new headset users.
This past year we introduced 20 major new products, more than ever in our history.These
products have redefined industry standards for performance and value. Our new wireless
products, for the first time ever, offer the combination of hands free, mobility, comfort, and
price people have been wanting. Our new mobile products are the first to offer padded,
conformable plastics for comfort with in-line controls for convenient adjustment of volume
and muting. Recognition of our success has been forthcoming, as we have won product of
the year awards from Teleconnect, Internet Telephony and Call Center Solutions.
Weve matched our product innovation by ramping up our marketing and promotion
activity in order to reach new users and improve our partnerships with our channels.This
included a number of consumer pull programs, ranging from direct mail to cross-sale
programs and special promotions. We began work with a number of ergonomic organizations
to improve awareness of the physical benets of headsets, leading to endorsement of
Plantronicsheadsets by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). We also
created and tested our rst advertising campaigns, which include radio, television, print,
and billboard, in addition to stepping up public relations efforts. Finally, we dramatically
improved our packaging and merchandising efforts, resulting in substantial increases in
shelf space devoted to our headsets and the successful addition of new retailers worldwide.
