>The Medical Systems Gro up handles medical endo sco pes as well
as minimally invasive pro ducts such as surgical pro ducts, endo -
sco pic ultraso und systems, and endo-therapy devices for medical
institutio ns. W ith appro ximately 7 0 % o f the wo rld market share,
O lympus gastro intestinal endo sco pes provide a solid earnings
foundation. In fiscal 2 0 0 4, sales o f the pro duct gro up ro se 7 .6 %
to ¥2 1 6 ,9 1 5 million (US$ 1 ,9 7 2 millio n), exemplifying continued
gro wth in sales to Asia. O perating inco me increased 1 5 .7 % to
¥6 3 ,2 1 6 million (US$ 5 7 5 million), reflecting efforts to lo wer
co sts o f pro ductio n. Do mestic sales climbed 9.0% to ¥63,325
million (US$ 5 7 6 millio n), while o verseas sales increased 7 .1 % to
¥1 5 3 ,5 9 0 million (US$ 1 ,396 million).
In April 2 0 0 3 , the Medical Systems Gro up was restructured,
transferring diag nostic systems and bio lo g ical microscopes to the
Life Science G roup.
M edical Endoscopes
>Sales o f medical endo sco pes ro se 3 .1 % to ¥134,029 million
(US$ 1 ,2 1 8 millio n).
In Japan, co nditions in the medical secto r were lackluster as
hospitals restricted capital investment amid reforms to the med-
ical system. O verseas co nditions were challenging as sales of
mainstay pro ducts entered a cyclical do wnturn. Despite this oper-
ating environment, O lympus recorded higher sales o f EVIS
