Satoru Iwata
President
Nintendo Co., Ltd.
Message from the President
Throughout the home entertainment industry’s history, Nintendo has created unique products that
integrate hardware and software, while this integration has primarily been driven by unique and
original software.
The basic strategy on which Nintendo has been focused is the expansion of the worldwide gaming
population. To this end, Nintendo is striving to get people from all over the world, regardless of
age, gender, language, cultural background or gaming experience, to embrace and enjoy video
games as a mode of entertainment.
In fact, “Gaming Population Expansion” is steadily advancing all over the world due to the spread
of two platforms: Nintendo DS, a hand-held device that offers intuitive operation to everyone and
aims to enrich the owner’s daily life, and Wii, a home console that aims to put smiles on the faces
of everyone surrounding it. However, our efforts toward this goal are ongoing, as there is still
plenty of potential left for the expansion of the gaming population.
While Nintendo will continue to offer a wide variety of attractive software in the future, Nintendo
is also working to accelerate the flow from “one Nintendo DS per household” to “one Nintendo
DS per person” by having customers embrace their Nintendo DSi as their own personal DS system.
In addition, Nintendo is leveraging the acceptance of the two platforms by a wide range of
customers to introduce new and unique offerings and services, such as the use of Nintendo DS in
public spaces and Wii-no-Ma, the online video streaming service that launched as one of the Wii
Channels in Japan in May 2009, that changes the relation between the family, television and
Internet.
Moving forward, Nintendo will continue to pursue the wonderful opportunities of video game
entertainment that bring smiles to everyone. We will also continue to challenge the industry’s
conventional notion of creating and categorizing games according to the player’s level of
experience by creating individual games that can satisfy all gamers, regardless of their gaming
experience or skill level, in order to truly create games for everyone and endeavor to further
expand the gaming population.
