MMNA oversees all passenger car-related sales, production, financing and R&D activities in North America (the United
States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico). Its establishment provides MMC with an enhanced strategic long-term perspec-
tive and planning capability in this region.
North American product launches included the OUTLANDER (marketed in Japan as the AIRTREK) in September 2002 and
the ENDEAVOR in March 2003. Manufactured locally, the ENDEAVOR is a new SUV that completes MMC’s lineup of SUVs in
the North American market. March 2003 also saw the launch of the latest model upgrade to the popular LANCER, the LANCER
EVOLUTION VIII.
Including vehicles marketed locally by DC under the Chrysler badge, total production in North America reached 204,000
units, an increase of 5% over the previous year.
EUROPE
Total auto sales in Europe (defined as sales of passenger cars and small commercial vehicles within all EU and EFTA nations)
dropped 3% year-on-year in calendar year 2002 to 16.18 million units.
MMC’s passenger car sales in Europe declined 5% to 203,000 units as the company focused on profitable models. Sales
of approximately 45,000 units of the SPACE STAR minivan, major change for which was introduced in June 2002, made a
substantial contribution to this figure. Sales were also markedly higher in rapidly expanding markets in Eastern Europe.
Sales rose 33% year-on-year in Russia to 8,000 units; 79% in Hungary to 3,000 units; and 18% in Poland to 2,000 units.
In January 2003, MMC integrated the regional sales subsidiary, Mitsubishi Motors Sales of Europe B.V. (MMSE), into a new
operating company for Europe, Mitsubishi Motors Europe B.V. (MME). Besides managing all sales, marketing and distribution
activities in Europe, MME will also help to integrate passenger car related production activities in the region. These comprise
the NedCar operations in the Netherlands and an engine manufacturing joint venture with DC in Germany (MDC Power GmbH).
