1999 Annual Report
Controlling waste is especially important for Harris Teeter,
where we sell greater amounts of perishables and fresh foods than
many other chains. We have targeted the reduction of waste as
one of our highest priorities and are utilizing tools such as inven-
tory control, production planning and known loss tracking to help
us achieve this goal.
The variety and uniqueness of the offerings in our deli/
bakery/fresh foods area are significant reasons why customers
shop at Harris Teeter. The restructuring and redesign of these
departments that were undertaken this year at many of our stores,
along with providing more consistent product offerings, are
expected to improve profitability.
Our capital expenditures this year focused on plant consoli-
dation activities and on upgrades to plants and processes in our
filament and core thread manufacturing. State-of-the-art equipment
and more cost-effective utilization will ultimately enhance our
market position in these and other highly engineered, higher-
margin products.
The ANETRACK system, a tool developed internally, allows us
to clearly illustrate the superiority of our products by demonstrating
the enhanced productivity our customers can attain by using A&E
thread during the sewing process.
