Amgen Scholars, a $34 million program that provides
undergraduates in the United States and Europe the
opportunity for laboratory research experiences under the
guidance of leading scientists in academia, launched its
second four-year phase to advance science learning and
inspire the next generation of scientists.
The Amgen Foundation supported the
Patients | Choices | Empowerment online competition
with Ashoka’s Changemakers to uncover solutions that
elevate patients’ voices and improve health outcomes
globally. The competition received 277 entries from more
than 40 countries and helped build a global community
of innovators working to ensure patients have an active
role in their personal healthcare. Three winners each
received a $10,000 cash prize.
The ability to attract and retain talent in the teaching
professionespecially in math and scienceis a
challenge in the United States and internationally. In
2010, the Amgen Foundation awarded grants in Greece
and Hungary to support resources that address this
need. The Foundation also provided funding for numerous
organizations in support of programs that advance
science education as well as improve the quality of care.
Since 2007, the Amgen Foundation has donated more
than $5 million to European non-governmental organizations.
Amgen and the Amgen Foundation responded to fi ve
disaster situations in 2010including the devastating
earthquake in Haitiwith nearly $2.3 million in monetary
support. In addition, the generosity of Amgen staff
coupled with matches from the company and the
Amgen Foundation totaled nearly half a million dollars.
In 2010, we implemented a comprehensive data
management system to measure our environmental
footprint. The system enables Amgen to gather
information on a range of measurable and verifi able
initiatives that are reducing our environmental impact.
AMGEN 2010 ANNUAL REPORT 11
Ogo Egbuna, M.D., a trained transplant nephrologist, spends
two or three evenings per month at the Conejo Free Clinic seeing
uninsured general medicine patients who can’t afford regular
medical care. Dr. Egbuna (shown above, left, with a patient) is
currently working to add a kidney screening and education
program to the Thousand Oaks, California, clinic’s list of services.
Susan McHugh (shown above, right, with her son, Wesley)
organized her community and raised more than $400,000 in
donations to build a handicap-accessible playground in Mandeville,
Louisiana. Children and adults, with or without disabilities, can now
socialize and play together at the Kids Konnection Playground.
Each year, thousands of Amgen staff members get
involved in their local communities, generously
devoting their time, talents, and funds to a variety
of charitable organizations. Amgen staff improve their
communities by building homes and playgrounds
for the underserved, lend their professional expertise
at free clinics, and tutor local children through after-
school programs—and those are just a few examples.
In 2010, the Amgen Foundation broadened its support
of staff volunteer efforts with the launch of Amgen
Volunteers. This three-pronged approach supports
staff volunteering by (1) providing access to local
volunteer opportunities through the new Amgen
Volunteers website, (2) recognizing outstanding
staff volunteers through the Amgen Excellence in
Volunteering Awards whereby 11 winners in the United
States and Puerto Rico were each awarded $5,000,
paid to the nonprofi t with which they volunteer, and
(3) continuing to provide $500 Volunteer Service
Grants for eligible nonprofi t organizations for every 15
hours volunteered by individual Amgen staff members.
